Our Voopoo Drag 2 review takes a detailed look at what one of the industry-leading mods can do. Is it really as good as people say, or are there better options out there if you’re looking for the very best?
Is it worth picking up?
If you’re brand new to vaping, the $80 price-tag might seem a little steep, but if you’re looking for something more capable and dependable than a standard mod, it’s definitely worth considering.
As well as the beautifully-made, well-presented and feature-packed mod, you get a capable and solid-performing tank included. For a long-term vaper, it’s a great option that you definitely won’t regret picking up.
If you’re new to vaping, it’s worth it if you’re happy to spend a little more time getting to grips with the features, and especially if you’ve tried vaping before but simpler devices don’t really do it for you.
Full review
The Drag from Voopoo made a big mark on the industry, and the second version aims to improve on what the original offered in every way. Aside from boosting the power output and reducing the size and weight of the device, the Drag 2 makes use of the GENE.FIT chip, which spent over a year in R&D to maximize performance from your device with a focus on either battery life, flavor or clouds. The newly-included “Fit” mode also protects your tanks from burnout, improving the lifespan of your coil and giving you more consistent performance. But for all the promises and bells and whistles, if you’re interested in picking up the device, the main thing you’ll want to know is how it performs. Is it worth the $79.99 price tag? Our Voopoo Drag 2 review aims to find out.
What You Get
The Voopoo Drag 2 comes in a basic box, surrounded by a sleeve with “Drag” on the front and the contents printed on the back. Inside, the mod sits on the upper layer, which you remove to reveal the Uforce T2 tank, which comes with a 0.4 ohm U2 coil pre-installed, and with a spare 0.2 ohm N3 coil contained in the kit. You also get an alternate glass tube, a USB charging cable and an instruction manual. In short, all you need to start vaping is two 18650 batteries and some e-juice. This is a great offering all-round.
Voopoo Drag 2 Review – The Design
Appearance
The Voopoo Drag 2 takes pride in its appearance, with eight different options for resin plating on one of the large sides and “Drag” written on the opposite side. The device has a pretty straightforward boxy shape, but the designs work really well, even the name of the mod in giant letters looks kinda cool. The front panel has two circular adjustment buttons below the rectangular screen and one big fire button above it, in a metallic color that works well with the black frame of the mod. The tank sits in the center of the top edge of the device, with a resin design on the mouthpiece to match the panel on the mod. Overall it looks great; it’s distinctive but doesn’t overcomplicate things.
Front Panel and Display Screen
Most of your interaction with the Drag 2 will be through the front panel and display screen, and thankfully it’s well designed and easy to get to grips with. The OLED display screen is fairy basic in comparison to many devices, but it does a good job of getting all the key information across in a user-friendly way. Your main setting is shown to the right, with two segmented battery level indicators far off to the left, and your resistance, firing voltage and the length of your last puff displayed beside it. The adjustment buttons are small but press in easily, and the fire button has an indented center which makes it really comfortable to operate.
Battery Compartment
The Drag 2 takes two 18650 batteries, and these are accessed through a magnetically-closing panel on the side of the device – the one with “Drag” printed across it in huge letters. This is easy to access thanks to two indented sections on either side of the panel, and it pulls off easily. On the inside, the correct polarity for the batteries is clearly marked, and there’s a ribbon in the compartment to help you remove the batteries when you need to. The magnets are powerful enough to make it pretty easy to replace the panel once you’re done changing your batteries.
The Uforce T2 Tank and Coils
The Uforce T2 tank included with the kit is pretty well-designed too. The tank has a top-filling system that works by sliding the top cap off to the side (indicated by an arrow above the logo), which makes it super-easy to refill, and you unscrew the base to access and change the coil. The pre-installed glass tube bulges out in the middle for an impressive 5 ml capacity, but there’s also a straight-sided 3.5 ml capacity option included with the kit. The tank also has three slot-style airflow slots that you can easily open up or close off to suit your preferences.
The coils have slightly different designs: the U2 coil is a dual parallel coil, with a big gap in the center to allow for impressive airflow. The N3 coil is a triple mesh coil design, with three separate compartments inside the atomizer head, and designed to run at slightly higher wattages than the U2 version.
Overall
The Voopoo Drag 2 is really-well designed, both in terms of usability and aesthetics. It might not do anything groundbreaking, but it ticks all the boxes you need from a mod in style.
Voopoo Drag 2 Review – Features
Variable Wattage Up to 177 W
As expected from any mod, the Voopoo Drag 2 offers variable wattage vaping. The maximum setting is 177 W, adding an extra 20 W in comparison to the previous version. You adjust the wattage in 1 W increments, which isn’t as precise as some other devices but realistically is more than enough control over your setting. It’s safe to say that most vapers will be more than satisfied with the maximum power output here, you’re unlikely to need more than this even if you’re a competitive cloud-chaser.
Temperature Control Vaping
The Voopoo Drag 2 also offers a full-featured temperature control mode, which supports vaping with stainless steel, titanium or nickel coils. It covers the standard temperature control range of 100 to 315 °C / 200 to 600 °F, and you can adjust your ramp-up wattage easily too. You can also adjust the temperature coefficient of resistance so you can tailor the performance to suit your preferences. Overall, you couldn’t really ask for anything else from a TC mode on a mod.
Fit Mode
A unique offering on the Drag 2 is “Fit” mode, which makes use of the Gene Fit chip to produce three presets, intended for battery life (1), flavor (2) and clouds (3). It’s also designed to protect tanks from burnout, although this is mainly intended for use with the Uforce tank that’s included with the kit (or others in the same line) and won’t work with rebuildables. They tested the mode with 161 tanks, though, so chances are it’ll perform reasonably well with whatever you’ve got.
Memory Modes
The Drag 2 also features some customizable memory modes, with five in total on the device. These allow you to customize the power output of the Drag over the course of your puff, so you get a custom power curve as you vape. This can be a great feature if you put the time into tailoring the power output, but realistically it’s best to just use it for a quick boost at the start of your puff. You can adjust it through the device but it’s easiest to do it using your computer.
Safety Features
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Drag 2 includes plenty of safety features. These include protection if you insert your batteries the wrong way around, short circuit protection, over-current protection, overcharging and overdischarge protection, a 10 second cutoff for puffs, temperature protection and a bit of firmware that monitors your batteries’ internal resistance during charging, to ensure safe on-board recharging.
Voopoo Drag Review – In Use
Performance – VW Mode and Fit Mode
The Voopoo Drag works really well in VW mode. The mod responds quickly and works well across the whole wattage range, although I spent more time at around 40 to 50 W than up at the top end. It performs excellently with pretty much any tank or atomizer you care to throw on it, and you can always depend on a hard-hitting and responsive vape. The combination with the UForce tank is especially good, with both the 0.2 ohm and 0.4 ohms coils putting out plenty of vapor and doing a fantastic job when it comes to flavor too. Both of the coils do guzzle juice quite quickly, but nothing much more than any standard sub ohm tank.
Fit mode is pretty similar to your standard VW vaping mode, but just with the settings tweaked a little based on whether you’re looking to maximize battery life, flavor or clouds. Personally I found all of the modes worked pretty well, but I generally preferred the standard approach because it gives you a bit more freedom over the type of vape you get. However, if you’re new to vaping with mods, this could take a lot of the guess-work out of finding the right setting for your purposes.
Performance – TC mode
The temperature control mode on the Voopoo Drag 2 works really well too. The option to set your preferred ramp-up wattage and adjust the TCR if needed gives you everything you need to really tailor the performance to suit your preferences. With everything fully tweaked (you probably won’t need to worry about changing your TCR, though) you’ll get top-quality performance in TC mode, with no sharp drop-offs when you hit the temperature limit and generally consistent vapor throughout your draw. The Uforce T2 tank doesn’t come with TC coils, but if you have a TC tank all you have to do is screw it on and start vaping.
Changing Modes and Navigation
Changing to a new mode on the Voopoo Drag 2 is a pretty straightforward process – you can cycle through to the next mode with three quick presses of the fire button. This works smoothly for the switch between VW, Fit Mode and TC mode, but when you change from TC back to VW mode you have to go through the extra stage of highlighting the wattage setting within TC mode first.
Overall, though, it’s pretty easy to navigate around the mod and you won’t need to use the menu unless you’re setting up the menu mode. That part could be easier (and it’s quicker if you use your computer to set up all five programs first), but the idea is that you only have to go through the process once so it isn’t really too bad.
Ease of Use
Aside from the basics with the mod itself, the main things you’ll have to do with the Voopoo Drag 2 kit is change the tank’s coil and refill it. Thankfully, both of these processes are really easy. Refilling is as simple as pushing back the top cap of the tank and inserting the spout of the juice bottle into the fill hole. You can fill it right the way up and you just close it up when you’re done.
Changing the coils is a bit more of an involved process, but all you have to do is unscrew the bottom of the tank (when it’s empty, of course) and then unscrew the coil from the base. The new one just goes in the same spot, although you should remember to “prime” the coil before putting it in place.
Overall, then, the mod is about as easy to use as a comparable device can be. Admittedly, programming the memory modes and getting the TC set up how you want it might require a bit of time with the manual if you’re new to vaping devices, but generally speaking you won’t have much problems getting to grips with everything.
Comfort and Portability
As a dual-battery mod, it’s not really surprising that portability isn’t a strong suit of the Voopoo Drag 2. It’s smaller than the original Drag and weighs less too, but realistically it’s still quite chunky, and the boxy shape doesn’t help with this either. That said, if you’re looking for a dual-battery device, portability is something you’ll always have to sacrifice, so it isn’t really a huge problem.
The shape doesn’t do it many favors when it comes to comfort either, but some little design features do help it out. The body of the device has a slight curve, which helps it to fit reasonably nicely into your hand, and the cut-off upper corner in particular gives a comfortable place to rest your index finger while you’re vaping. Of course, it’s less comfortable than a pen or pod-style device, but for it’s class it does a good job.
Build Quality
The Voopoo Drag 2 has been really well put together. The quality of materials throughout is obvious, but the battery door is probably the best example of the care that Voopoo put into manufacturing. The door attaches solidly enough to stay in place in day to day use, but if you want to remove it, then you don’t have to put in much directed effort. And on top of this, it’s presented really well, with minimal obvious magnets and even attention to detail on the inside. This is the level of effort that went into every aspect of the Drag 2.
