Our eGrip 2 review looks at the new all-in-one style e-cig from Joyetech: with tons of excellent features, an in-built 2100 mAh battery and solid performance, it’s definitely a device to consider for both new and longer-term vapers.
Is it worth picking up?
It’s very rare a device comes along that seems absolutely perfect for just-switching smokers, and much more rare for it to also be a device I’d recommend to longer-term vapers, but the Joyetech eGrip 2 box mod has managed it.
Taking the best features from Joyetech’s recent offerings and combining them into a user-friendly, full-featured vaping powerhouse, the eGrip 2 is really hard to fault. It performs excellently, is pleasingly straightforward to use while still having potential to grow with you, and being exceptionally portable, I’d put it as one of the best vape mods I’ve tried, hands-down.
If you’re just switching to vaping and don’t mind dealing with adjusting some settings, or if you’re a longer-term vaper looking for something to use out of the house, just buy it. You won’t regret it.
Full review
The Joyetech eGrip was a pretty revolutionary device. By combining the atomizer and tank with the main device, it kick-started the “all in one” style of e-cig, which has quickly been followed up with devices like the Kanger Nebox, the Aspire Plato and the Joyetech eGo AIO, as well as an update to the eGrip with an OLED screen. The eGrip II mod aims to follow up on the success of its predecessors, improving on the look of the device, boosting the available wattage (up to a substantial 80W), including temperature control and adding a better screen than on the OLED version. For just $84.90 for the device, it definitely looks promising, especially for new vapers, but does the reality live up to the hype? We’ve tested the device for our Joyetech eGrip 2 review to find out.
The Joyetech eGrip 2 was provided to us for the purposes of this review by Heaven Gifts, but as always, this will be a completely honest appraisal of the device.
What You Get
The Joyetech eGrip 2 mod comes in a standard-style box, and your device sits inside in a foam block, with a manual, a warranty card and some information about the different coils on pieces of paper and card loose in the box. Underneath, there are two boxes, one containing your USB charger and another with a spare drip tip, one 0.5 ohm stainless steel coil, a 0.25 ohm “notch coil,” a 1.5 ohm Clapton coil (intended for mouth-to-lung vaping), an RBA head and an adapter so you can use the device like any other mod. Overall, it’s an excellent offering, and provides everything you need to start vaping other than e-juice.
Joyetech eGrip 2 Design
The Joyetech eGrip 2 takes design cues from its predecessor, but improves things a lot. The device has a standard box mod shape, with slightly curved edges and measuring 45 mm wide, 24 mm thick and 95 mm tall (about 1 and 3/4 inches wide by 1 inch thick by 3 and 3/4 inches tall), and the device fits comfortably into your hand, and even though it’s a little heavy it’s a very portable mod. It comes in black, gold, silver, red and white.
A big, clear display screen – like that on the eVic VT – occupies the front face of the device, with an oval-shaped fire button above and a two-way adjustment button below it, both of which sit flush to the face of the mod and are easy to press. The tank is towards the top of the opposite side, with the top cap and drip tip section screwing off to reveal the space for your e-juice. There’s also a window in the body of the mod, showing your current juice level and having a marker for the max fill line on it too.
Like on the Joyetech eGo AIO, the coil attaches to the bottom of the top cap, leaving you a big wide space to fill up into and making changing coils really easy. It also has a similar airflow control system to the AIO, which is built into the top cap, and is opened fully by turning it to the right and closed by turning it left. You can also remove the drip tip and replace it with any standard-size alternative, including the spitback-reducing option included in the kit.
Overall, the Joyetech eGrip 2 mod doesn’t do too much on the design front, but does a fantastic job of keeping everything compact and almost unbeatably simple.
Joyetech eGrip 2 Features
The eGrip 2 vape mod has tons of features for such a beginner-friendly device. The most basic is the variable wattage, which offers free control over the power going to your atomizer from 1W all the way to 80W, adjustable in 0.1 W increments. When you hold down an adjustment button, the device scrolls through the available wattages progressively quickly, making it quite straightforward to make large changes in setting. You can also set the device in “bypass” mode if you want the raw battery voltage applied to your coil without adjustment – I personally never use this, but the option is there if you want it.
The temperature control (TC) functionality is also fantastic, with support for nickel, titanium and stainless steel coils, as well as three options (labeled M1 to M3) which allow you to set your own temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR), so you can adjust the performance of TC mode to suit your preferences and to support additional wire types such as iron-nickel alloys. You can set this by holding the “fire” and “up” buttons while the eGrip 2 is off.
The Joyetech eGrip 2 all-in-one mod has tons of other features aside from these, too. Firstly, they’ve included the ability to customize the color the LED (built into the tank portion) lights up when you vape, with options for blue, green, yellow, red, cyan, white and purple. You can also adjust how long the screen stays active when you aren’t using the device, with options ranging from 1 to 30 minutes. There’s also an optional logo which you can activate or deactivate.
Both the most pointless and the most bizarrely enjoyable feature is the fact that they’ve included Flappy Bird on the eGrip 2. You don’t buy an e-cig to play short-lived mobile games, but its inclusion is still a good thing – although you may look a little odd hunched over the tiny screen of your device, frantically pressing the fire button to avoid the next set of pipes standing in your way, it’s definitely a nice addition and gives you something to do if you’re ever bored but have your eGrip 2 to hand.
Similarly, but not quite as pointless or as fun, there’s also a clock on the Joyetech eGrip 2 mod, with a date setting too. You can get the most of this by changing the home screen to display the clock, but even with the screen on another setting, the clock appears when you’ve left the device unattended for a little while. Changing the homescreen itself is the more useful feature, though, and you can also edit the specific bits of information you want to appear: for instance, on the power display, you can choose whether you want the eGrip 2 to display the current you’re drawing as you vape, a puff counter or the time you’ve spent vaping.
And of course, the Joyetech eGrip 2 comes with the usual raft of safety features vapers have come to expect, including over 10 second puff protection, short circuit protection, low battery protection, low resistance protection (which kicks in if you go below the 0.1 ohm minimum in wattage mode or the 0.05 ohm minimum in TC mode) and high temperature protection.
The eGrip also allows you to vape while the device is charging. For an all-in-one style device, this is a must-have feature in my view. It makes the difference between having something that’s always ready to go when you’re craving nicotine and something that requires you to have something to vape as its charging, or occasionally take it off charge for a quick session. It’s not a deal-breaker, but it’s definitely a vital addition to what the eGrip 2 has to offer.
Overall, the Joyetech eGrip 2 mod does an exceptional job when it comes to features. It’s simple enough to be used by somebody new to vaping, but still packs plenty of features to keep longer-term vapers happy.
Joyetech eGrip 2 In Use
So far in our Joyetech eGrip 2 review, we’ve covered the excellent design and the abundant feature-set of the device, but the most important thing is how the device performs and functions on a day-to-day basis.
On the whole, I couldn’t be happier with the eGrip 2 in use. For new vapers, the simplicity of the device is about as important as the performance it offers: you could have the best e-cig mod on the market, but if it’s needlessly complicated, it won’t be ideal for a new vaper. The all-in-one design really gives the eGrip its huge potential for new vapers.
When you first get the device, you have two things to do before you can start vaping, and these underline just how easy it is to get vaping with the eGrip 2 mod. Firstly, you have to install the coil. This is very simple: you unscrew the top cap section, and you’ll notice an empty spot on the underside. To install your coil, you simply screw it into this spot. You can drip a little bit of e-juice into the top of the coil to “prime” it before you attach it and fill up, but in any case this is about as easy as it gets.
To refill, with the top cap removed the tank section is exposed, and you have a huge, open space to fill up into. This means there’s no central tube to avoid, and nothing to make it harder than it needs to be. Simply drip some e-liquid into the big opening until it gets to the level clearly indicated at the side of the window. Then you screw the top cap back down, wait five minutes for the juice to soak in and then you’re ready to vape.
For a new user, the only potential sticking-point is navigating around the various features and getting the eGrip 2 in your desired mode. The device does a pretty good job of keeping this as simple as possible too, though. To change modes, which is the main thing you’ll have to do, all you do is press the fire button three times in quick succession, and then the top line of your chosen home screen will start flashing. From here, you press the “up” adjustment button to switch to a different mode (e.g. TC mode, wattage mode, bypass mode and the customizable TCR mode), with one extra option to keep the clock on your home screen, and hit the “fire” button when you’re on your desired mode.
In general, the rule for making your way around the Joyetech eGrip 2 vape mod is to use the “up” button to change the currently highlighted setting and the “down” button to highlight another setting. For example, if you’re in TC mode, you press “down” to highlight the material it's set to and then “up” to cycle through “Ni,” “Ti” and “SS316” (nickel, titanium and stainless steel). Pressing “down” again takes you to the “ramp up” wattage setting, and pressing “up” from there changes it, although in this case after you’ve started adjusting it you can also use the “down” button to make changes. All of the settings work in this basic way, so although it could be simpler it isn’t difficult to get to grips with.
Once you’ve got the tank filled, the coil installed and the device on the right setting, all that’s left to do is vape. The performance from the eGrip 2 is fantastic, regardless of the mode you’re vaping in or the coil you’re using. In wattage mode, you simply dial in your setting and vape away, with impressive vapor production and generally great flavor.
For the TC modes, you have the standard range of options for temperature – from 200 to 600 °F and 100 to 315 °C – and the performance is solid with the included SS 316 coils. Using the device’s menu (just like described above), you can lock the room temperature resistance of the coil (to ensure accurate TC) and also adjust the ramp-up wattage. The performance when you’re all set up is excellent – you get a consistent vape, with the applied wattage dropping off smoothly when you hit your limit and keeping it hovering around the desired temperature.
The “Notch Coil” performs really well, as does the other SS option, and both are perfectly suited to vapers looking for a great direct-to-lung performance. With the airflow all the way open (turned as far to the right as it will go) you get substantial vapor production and a very satisfying vape. The 1.5 ohm Clapton coil is designed for lower-power, mouth-to-lung vaping (so you inhale like you would from a cigarette), and is perfect for just-switching smokers. The increased surface area of the Clapton coil means you get great vapor and flavor even at lower settings and with the airflow turned down so it’s nice and tight.
The RBA head offers great performance right out of the box (since it comes with a coil and wick installed), and is set up so more experienced vapers can make their own coils for the eGrip 2 all-in-one e-cig mod. Building on the coil isn’t the easiest thing in the world, admittedly, but once you’ve had a couple of attempts you’ll get the hang of it. There’s a screw-point in the bottom for one of the legs of your coil and the other goes through the rubber plug stuck into the bottom but on the underside of the pin that keeps it in place. The hardest part is getting the wicking set up right, because you need to keep good contact with the coil but still have the cotton pushing right up against the wicking ports, all the while avoiding making it too dense to soak up e-juice effectively. I managed it eventually, and it’s a great extra to include, but honestly I preferred using the pre-built coils.
A final little extra is the adapter, which closes off the integrated tank and allows you to use standard 510-threaded atomizers with the eGrip 2. This is easy to screw in place, and works without issues. This massively increases the potential of the Joye eGrip 2 as a first device: you can use the all-in-one design when you’re new to vaping, but if you pick up another atomizer, it can still do what you need it to. This feature really gives the eGrip 2 the ability to grow with you as you get more accustomed to vaping and move to other atomizers.
The in-built 2100 mAh battery is plenty to get you through a day of vaping, and especially so if you’re vaping on the mouth-to-lung coil with lower wattages. Plus, the vape-while-charging functionality means that all you have to do is bring the included USB cable with you and you can continue vaping pretty much regardless of what happens. It takes about 3 hours to recharge from flat, but this will be longer if you’re vaping as you go.
Overall, the Joye eGrip II is a fantastic device in use. The RBA head is a bit difficult to work with, and the menu system could probably be made a little more user-friendly, but the key features and functions work perfectly.
