We've all heard the arguments before. The anti-e-cig crowd cries that there hasn't been enough research on the effects, that the hypothetical issues with the manufacturing process could lead to catastrophic consequences for users or that they are as dangerous tobacco outright. However, an old rationalist analogy from philosopher Bertrand Russell teaches us that it is the anti-e-cig crowd – not researchers who understand the amazing potential for harm reduction – are the ones who should be offering evidence. HuffPost Live Post Debate About E-Cigs
The Huffington Post has uploaded a 24-minute video debate in response to Contra Costa County’s decision to ban vaping in no smoking areas. The move also means that any sellers have to obtain a tobacco retailer license in order to sell any e-cigs. This is a controversial move, since e-cigs are not smoking and release nowhere near the level of chemicals you’d find in a tobacco cigarette, but the fierce debate still rages on. Read More
Us Air Force and E-Cigs
In the US Air Force, e-cigarettes are treated in exactly the same way as tobacco cigarettes. That means if any personnel want to reduce the harm they’re doing to themselves through their nicotine addiction, they aren’t allowed to unless they stand in designated areas with smokers, who are pumping in excess of 7,000 chemicals out into the air. The fact that the e-cigarette users are releasing primarily water vapor doesn't matter in the eyes of the Air Force, and as if this wasn't enough, the anti e-cig efforts they started in 2010 have been redoubled. Vaping is Safer Than Smoking
New research from the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in New York is piling up even more evidence that using electronic cigarettes is considerably safer than the tobacco alternative. It looked specifically at several toxic components found in cigarettes, and compared the levels of them to those found in e-cigs. Unsurprisingly, they found that e-cigs contain from 9 to 450 times less toxic components than their tobacco counterparts. Anybody persisting in the belief that e-cigs can be just as dangerous as traditional cigarettes is left with even more to explain, but yet the story seems conspicuously absent from the mainstream media. Legacy For Health Against E-Cigs
The American Legacy Foundation has released a statement which makes the bold claims that “consumers are taking unknown risks by using e-cigarettes,” contributing another misinformed, scaremongering piece of pseudo-scientific nonsense to a debate where lives literally hang in the balance. They advocate the use of traditional nicotine replacement therapies, which will generally only successfully help 17 out of 100 people. Let’s think for a second about what they’re proposing that those other 83 people do… Yep, if the current NRT products have failed you, you should be “wary” of using e-cigarettes, so assumedly the only option left from Legacy’s perspective is good old, carcinogenic tobacco. The days when you could smoke tobacco in bars are coming to an end. As more and more states opt for smoke-free laws which affect restaurants and bars, you will see people lighting up inside less and less. However, businesses are free to choose if they allow e-cigarettes in their establishments, so the future of indoor nicotine consumption is still uncertain. So far, however, businesses that have embraced the technology have benefited from it, and there are several reasons why. Read More

California Deputy Attorney General Jeanne Finberg has taken it upon herself to impose a non-existent ban on the sale of flavored cartridges, igniting the anger of the e-cigarette community with a move that flies in the face of logic and reason. According to Ms. Finberg, the flavors available in e-cigarette cartridges attract minors to e-cigarettes. Not only is this unsupported by state or federal law, it’s also a completely redundant move because the sale of e-cigarettes to minors has been specifically outlawed in the state since 2010. Regardless, she pursues any company who supplies flavored e-liquids or cartridges with threatening letters and orders to cease selling anything other than tobacco and menthol flavors in the state. One of the most commonly cited arguments against electronic cigarettes is that “there is no way of knowing what’s inside them.” Shocking as it may sound; you can rest assured that is far from true. Consumer safety regulations protect people from dangerous substances, and most respectable manufacturers send their products for third-party testing to further verify their safety for consumption. In comparison to tobacco smoke, which has at least 5,000 chemicals (the actual figure is unknown), electronic cigarettes have a clear advantage because they only contain a handful of chemicals.
